Salt water seemed so basic that I doubted it would do much, but it actually felt soothing—when I didn’t overdo the salt.
Totally get that. I was skeptical too, but it’s weird how something so simple actually works better than those fancy rinses. I’ve also tried the baking soda trick—honestly, it made things feel less harsh for me, especially during flare-ups. I did notice if I got the ratio wrong, it tasted pretty gross, though. Lukewarm is key, like you said. Anything else just feels off when your gums are tender.

Yeah, I totally relate—baking soda always ends up tasting like a science experiment gone wrong for me. Honestly, I’ve had better luck with those “fancy” rinses, even if they’re overpriced and come in weird neon colors. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like tech should’ve given us something tastier by now? Salt water’s fine and all, but I always wonder if I’m missing out on some next-gen gadget that makes this less... salty. Anyone else secretly wish their mouth rinse came with an app?
Yeah, I get what you mean about wishing for something more high-tech. It’s wild that we’ve got electric toothbrushes that sync with our phones, but rinses are still basically salt and water. I’ve tried those smart water flossers that claim to “customize” the experience, but honestly, they’re more about pressure than taste. Not sure why no one’s made a rinse that’s both effective and doesn’t taste like a swimming pool.
I’ve messed up the salt ratio too—sometimes it’s so salty it burns, other times it just tastes weirdly flat. I do think the old-school stuff works, but it feels like there should be a way to make it less gross. Maybe a pod system or something? Like, pop a flavor pod in, connect to an app, pick your “rinse of the day”... Seems like an obvious upgrade.
Until then, I just chase the rinse with a sip of water. Not ideal, but better than that lingering salt taste.
Yeah, the taste is definitely the worst part—my kid had to do salt rinses after having a baby tooth pulled, and getting him to swish it around was a battle every time. What worked for us was measuring out the salt with a tiny spoon (I think it was about half a teaspoon per cup), then adding just a bit of warm water so it dissolved better. Still, he made faces every single time. I wish there were flavored options, too. Maybe not bubblegum, but something less harsh would be nice...

Totally agree—I've always wondered why someone hasn't made a mild mint or chamomile version. When I had my braces adjusted, the salt rinse was rough. I tried adding a tiny squeeze of lemon just to mask the taste, and it helped a bit, but not much. The aftertaste is just hard to get past.
