How often do your kids actually need to see the dentist?

I’m honestly confused about how often I should be taking my 5-year-old for dental checkups. Some people say every six months, but others act like that’s overkill unless there’s a problem. My kid hates the dentist, so dragging him in more than necessary feels… mean? Is there a “right” answer or is it just one of those things everyone does differently?

Honestly, I kinda get where you’re coming from. Everyone says “six months,” but I’ve always wondered if that’s just the default because it’s easy to remember. My kid had a phase where we skipped almost a year (not proud, just… life), and the dentist didn’t freak out or anything—just said to watch for cavities and keep up with brushing. Feels like if your kid’s teeth look fine and you’re good about hygiene, maybe you don’t need to be super rigid about it? Not saying skip it forever, but sometimes the “rules” are just tradition.

I totally get this. I used to think the six-month thing was sacred, but then braces happened and suddenly I was at the orthodontist every few weeks, dentist less often. Honestly, my teeth didn’t fall out or anything. I do wonder if the “every six months” rule is just a holdover from when dental care wasn’t as good. Still, I’d be nervous to push it too far—cavities can sneak up on you. But yeah, sometimes life just happens and it’s not the end of the world.
