Weirdest Thing You’ve Learned About Braces Tightening?

You nailed it with the food boredom thing. I’ve seen so many people just get totally over the “safe” foods after a couple rounds of tightening. It’s wild how something as simple as switching from applesauce to mashed sweet potatoes or adding a bit of cinnamon to oatmeal can make things feel less like a chore. I always tell folks, don’t be afraid to experiment a little - even if it means a few weird combos. It really does help keep spirits up during the tougher days.

Mashed sweet potatoes were a lifesaver for me too, but I gotta admit, I once got desperate enough to try blending up lasagna. Not my proudest moment. You’re right though, it gets so dull eating the same “safe” stuff after every tightening - sometimes you just need to get weird with it. I even started adding a little hot sauce to my mashed potatoes just for a change. It sounds gross, but honestly, when your teeth hurt that much, anything with flavor feels like a win.

Blending up lasagna is actually kind of genius, honestly. I remember after one tightening, I tried pureeing chicken noodle soup with extra noodles, and it ended up looking like baby food... but at least it tasted different. I totally get the need for flavor - plain mashed potatoes get old fast. Did you ever try any cold foods when your teeth were super sore? I found that yogurt or even cold applesauce sometimes helped with the ache, but I’m not sure if that’s just me.

I tried cold applesauce too, but honestly it made my teeth ache even more. Maybe I’m just sensitive to cold stuff? Yogurt was okay, but I kept worrying about getting it stuck in my brackets. Did you ever have issues with that?

Oh, I hear you on that one. Yogurt was my go-to after every tightening, but I definitely noticed it would cling to the brackets and wires. I used to keep a little travel-sized bottle of water with me just to swish around after eating. Helped a bit, though it didn't solve everything. Sometimes I'd find a bit still hiding in there hours later - kind of embarrassing when you catch it in the mirror after talking to people all day.

As for the cold sensitivity, that's been a thing for me too. Applesauce straight from the fridge was a no-go. I started letting it sit out for a bit, just to take the edge off, and that helped. My teeth felt like they were singing if I tried anything icy.

Funny how you start to notice all these little quirks once you have braces. Never thought I'd spend so much time thinking about the temperature of applesauce or how sticky yogurt can be...

Honestly, I relate to all of that. The yogurt thing drove me up the wall, especially since I was trying to avoid pricier “special” snacks after each tightening. I’d just rinse with water and hope for the best - sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. That cold sensitivity is real too. I started microwaving applesauce for like 10 seconds, just so it wasn’t straight from the fridge. It’s wild how you get creative just to save a little money and keep things comfortable. You’re definitely not alone in this.

Totally get this. I remember thinking I’d just eat mashed potatoes for a few days because they were cheap and filling, but even that got old fast. The cold sensitivity is brutal - ice water was a no-go for weeks after each tightening. I actually started leaving stuff out on the counter for a bit so it wasn’t fridge-cold. Honestly, it’s all about finding those little tricks that don’t break the bank.

Leaving stuff out to warm up - yep, that’s a classic move. I’ve heard some folks even microwave their drinks just to take the chill off, which sounds weird until you’re dealing with that sensitivity. I’m curious, did you notice any foods that were unexpectedly easy (or hard) after a tightening? For me, scrambled eggs were a lifesaver, but even soft bread felt like chewing rocks sometimes.

And about the mashed potatoes - totally agree, they get old fast. I always tell people to rotate in things like yogurt or cottage cheese, but not everyone’s into that texture. Did you try any of those, or was it mostly potatoes for you? I guess everyone finds their own “survival menu” during those first few days.

Also, did you ever get those random headaches after an adjustment? Some people swear it’s part of the process, others barely notice. Just wondering if that was your experience too, or if it was all about the teeth and jaw for you.

Totally get what you mean about bread - everyone acts like it’s the “easy” food, but after a tightening? Not a chance. I actually found cold applesauce easier than some of the supposedly soft stuff, which surprised me. And yeah, headaches hit me hard after my first adjustment. I always thought it was just jaw pain, but nope, it radiated right up. Hang in there - it does get better, even if the “survival menu” is weird at first.

Funny you mention bread - I tried a slice after my second tightening and honestly thought I’d chipped a tooth. Ended up living off mashed potatoes for days. The headaches threw me, too, more than the tooth pain some weeks. It really is a weird adjustment period.

I’ve been thinking about that a lot, actually. The headaches are what caught me off guard, too - not just the tooth stuff. I kept wondering if it was just me, but honestly, I think it’s more about the tension in your whole jaw shifting than any single tooth hurting. I started tracking when the headaches hit, and they always lined up with the days after a tightening.

Bread is a funny one. For me, it was carrots. I thought “oh, they’re healthy, they’ll be fine,” and then instantly regretted it. I’m not convinced mashed potatoes are the answer, though. I tried switching to soft scrambled eggs and yogurt, and that seemed to help with the hunger and the soreness.

But here’s where I’m a bit skeptical: are we all just supposed to accept this level of discomfort? I actually went for a second opinion after my third tightening because the pain felt excessive. Turns out, my wires were a little too tight for my case. If the headaches or pain get worse, I’d push for a re-evaluation, not just tough it out. Sometimes I think orthodontists assume we’ll just deal with it, but I’m not buying that anymore.

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually think some discomfort is just part of the process - though yeah, there’s a line. I’ve had headaches after adjustments, but nothing unmanageable. Sometimes I wonder if we expect too much comfort from what’s basically moving bones around. Still, I’d agree that if it feels wrong, a second opinion doesn’t hurt.

Is it really normal to have headaches after every adjustment, though? I always worry it means something’s off. Last time, my jaw ached for days and I started thinking maybe they tightened too much. Does anyone else get nervous about nerve pain with this stuff?

I get where you’re coming from - after my first few tightenings, I had headaches and jaw aches too. It freaked me out at first, especially when the pain lingered for a couple days. From what my ortho said, mild headaches and soreness are pretty common since your teeth and jaw are shifting. But if the pain is severe or lasts more than a few days, have you checked in with your orthodontist? I was nervous about nerve pain too, but apparently that’s pretty rare unless there’s numbness or tingling. Did your ortho give you any tips for managing the soreness? I found that sticking to soft foods and using a warm compress helped a lot.
